modem-no dial tone

my new Dell recognizes my modem but trying to activate AOL for the first time i cannot get a dial tone.

Do you have the telphone line connected and connected correctly?  There are two jacks on the modem, one is for a voice telphone and the other is for the telephone line.  Make sure you have the cable corrected correctly (and that you are using a known good cable).

I am having the same problem with a Inspiron 1000. I have run Modem helper and it does not hear the dial tone and reports an Error Code 70.

If I go into the control panel and ask it to Query the modem it reports that everything is OK.

Now as an aside the modem driver reports that this is an Agere Systems AC'97 modem, but the sticker on the bottom says it is a FOXCONN, Scorpio T60M283.

I have deleted the drivers once and allowed Windows to reinstall the software so this was not a solution.

on advice from Dell, i looked inside the tower and the modem was not all the way in. I unscrewed it and pushed it in all the way to make 100% contact. It works like a charm after that.  Talk about wasting a Saturday afternoon on the phone!!!

(i don't know if i sent this to the right msg user) but on advice from Dell i looked inside the tower and noticed that the modem was not making 100% contact, so i undid  (un-crewed)it and pushed it back in all the way and re-tightened it (s_rewed it in tightly. works fine now.    The words in parenthesis had to be re-spelled since the original words are a no-no and Dell wouldn't submit this msg with them listed as such
