Modem Not Connect to Internet

My computer crashed as I logged off the internet.
Windows XP Home.

After reboot...the computer would not connect to the internet. Modem made no noise and was not detected by windows.
It was so quiet I thought I burned out the modem.
Lucky I have the extended tech support for two more years.

1. Ran Adware/spybot
2. Device manager
Working and enabled
Reinstalled Driver
Uninstalled and reinstalled Modem (Still not Working)
3. Went to Kinkos, connected for a short time through NIC with Internet Explorerer, renistalled netscape.
4. Windows now recognizes the modem but says the port is in use with another program. Error code 619. Also, will no longer connect through NIC with IE.

Should I go into the device manager and uninstall the Com port and let windows reinstall?
Are there setting that may have changed that I can reset for the ports (com).
Not sure what the port has to do with the modem?????
I haven't had much experience with modems and I guess this will be a learning experience.
I will be calling tech support tonight, but thought I would see if anyone here might have an idea.
Thank You
Lisa

Check out this link for modem error codes and links to Microsoft knowledge base:
http://www.modemsite.com/56k/duns604.asp

Go to the Phone/Modem control panel
Start>settings>control panel
and open the phone/modem control panel
Click on modem tab. Your modem should be listed and probably say connected to COM3. Click Properties button, and then on troubleshooting button. See if it reports any errors. The modem has to be attached to the correct serial (com) port in order to function properly, and yes there may be port settings that got changed...
