modem not found in registry

I have a new modem which I can not get to operate (fails three of the four tests in modem helper)

I am approaching the problem in small steps by trying to understand the modem testers messages.

so this question:  what establishes the modem name in the registry?  Installation of the driver or does windows do this upon startup recognizing a newly installed device?

rltusch,

Thanks for using the Dell Community Forum.

Can you tell us what model computer, what modem and what operating system you have.  The more information you can provide, the better the chances of getting a valid response.

to finish the message:

modem connection is 8 data bits; parity set at none; amd stop bits 1

in summary, modem does not detect dial tone and when the pc starts up, windows detects a new device in hte pci slot, but then can not locate the driver.

New modem purchased from dell, paperwork does not indicate name of modem nor model.  Dell supply person said it was compatible with my oe modem.

PC is dimension xps t600r running windows 98se

modem fails the last three of the four modem test results.

yet when I go to device manager, the response is that the modem is working okay

the modem driver is indicated to be vmm32.vxd (vcomm.vxd)

modem  is using com1

I'm not really familiar with that PC, but shouldn't modem be on com3?

Ron:  I believe it has always been on com 1, but i guess i can give com 3 a try.

windows seems to find something in the pci slot as it produces the "found new hardware" everytime it starts ----only problem is that it cant seem to establish the modem name  in the directory----or at least thats what the modem tester reports.

thanks for your reply---its been six months working this problem and i would like some new scenery.

Have you attempted to reload the drivers for it? And, if it's still under warranty, it's time to get Dell to replace it.

Ron:  yes, have try to reload the drivers but when I do, the response is a box which says the device already has the best driver for it.

Here's a brief summary of the events:

Nearby lightning strike six months ago--pc was plugged in to current and into tel line--pc was off.

PC was found next morning with reset button popped out--finally got it up and running with some confusion on  the part of windows, but it eventually started up okay and has been running fine on all programs since.

BUT, modem reported no dialtone.

Ran modem tester after assuring that the phone line was okay.-  modem did not report hardware failure, but did say could not detect a dialtone.

assumed modem was bad (may now be a bad assumption) ---replaced it with a part bought from dell.

Installed new modem in first one slot then another, but could not get it installed software-wise.

In order to install the new modem, had to remove the name of the original modem by using install/remove hardware.

so now the system has the old modem info removed and am now trying to install the new modem.

when I start the pc, windows recognizes the "new device" as a pci card in the expansion slot and leads me through searching for drivers.  I lead it to the drivers but the response is always that it can not find a driver for it  (even tho confirmed that the driver is where it was directed).

now, ever since removing the old modem name from the system, the response when i run modem helper is that it fails the last three tests with the essence being that the modem name can not be found in the registry.

when i go to device manager, it does list "standard 14.4 voice/fax modem", the name I selected from the generic list provided by windows.

this 70 year old man is having trouble with this dang nab machine.  (and stubborn enough to keep trying to fix it)

Lightning strike...well that could've caused all kinds of problems with your PC. Lucky it's running at all! Possible you have registry problem rather than modem problem? You might want to repost this in the operating systems forum.

Assuming you're free of viruses, have you done any registry repairs? You might try Microsoft's free regclean v4.1a which is supposed to work on Win 98. MS doesn't support it anymore, but it's available from PCworld:
http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file_description/0,fid,4666,00.asp

A good thing is that any changes it makes can be undone by double-clicking on backup file it creates each time.

Did you test com3? Are you sure 'standard 14.4 voice/fax modem' is correct choice for new modem? Isn't there anything like '56K voice/fax modem'?

ron:  you have raised some good questions.   I am presently in michigan visiting my 97 year old mother and will pursue the tracks you suggested.  but it will be a few days before i do, but will post a report for you to consider if you are willing to hang in there
on this problem.
