Modem not found!

On a brand new Dimension 2400 the modem works with AOL, but when trying to make a network connection to another ISP I get the error message 797, "Modem not found." I did use PC Relocator to move files. Modem helper says modem is OK!

I have spent hours on this with Dell support before I loaded AOL and found that the modem works fine with it. Help! Thanks, Paul

pmdelage,

Thanks for using the Dell Community Forum.

Since the modem works with AOL we know the problem isn't the modem or the operating system.  It's somewhere in the additional software.

I would first recommend you contact the other ISP and see what they can tell you.  I can tell you that usually AOL's software likes to take full control of the modem which can make it difficult to use two ISP's.

Michael, if the modem is not found, what would the ISP have to do with it? I am using the XP network connection software. Someone suggested that the fact that I used PC Relocator to move files may have caused the problem. Also, the problem predates me loading AOL, so I doubt that is what is causing it. Any more thoughts? Paul

pmdelage,

I was only wanting to see if the other ISP knew of any issues between their service and AOL's software.  As I stated earlier, AOL is known to "take complete control" of the modem.  I was hoping that we didn't have to do a complete reinstall.  That's the only reason I thought of asking the other ISP.

Try posting this in Software - Other and see if anybody knows of issues that PC Relocator might cause with modems.  Otherwise, post this in Windows XP and see about doing a reinstall.  We know the modem and the drivers are okay, otherwise they would not work with AOL.
