Do you by chance have MSN or AOL or Earthlink? Those symptoms sound like a V.92 connection through an ISP that does not support Modem on Hold.

Your isp is the problem. They have not enabled MOH.

To prove this, have someone call you to make the screen appear. Then, immediately get you modem on hold text file. Search for files with mohlog in name.

When you find the file, open it up. It will give a whole list of interesting data that WOULD have appeared on your MOH screen. And it will also say connected at v.90. You need the log made for this action to demonstrate this.

The poblem is that many isps have MOH turned off at their end and not allowing the v92, unless someone makes noise. In order to get anywhere, you will need to show this info to your isp when you call for tech support. The problem is teat isps get their lines from ultra large providers. The really big one, Level 3, turned off enabling this at their end by internal memo early in 2003, and only allows it when a request is made. So your isp may have advertised v.92, but they are not being given it either.

Do a search on this board, this has been covered a lot. And I can vouch for this, I have been through this last fall, twice, when after it was resolved my isp wound up with some lines switched and I had to go through this again.

But when resolved--it is a wondrous thing to have your computer ring and be able to do this.

I have Earthlink and it does support Modem on Hold.   It only gives you 4 minutes but that is plenty of time to get rid of  someone you don't want to talk to and if it is my family I just let it disconnect anyway. The nice thing is my family can get me and there is no need for a second telephone line saving me money.  You do have to enable Modem on hold in Control panel.
