I installed a PCI modem in my 8100 using XP Pro, and XP installed automatically, without any further action from me. It was a simple plug/play operation, and I'm nearly positive you should experience the same thing with your install.
You have a MDC ( modem daughter card ) not a PCI modem like the I8100. It is the small card under the big door in the base. If the part no is 0E828 if it is a PcTel. The sticker on the base may also have the brand. There are several that could be in it. Have you tried the resouce CD, It will normally give a tick beside the right driver. If you can find the brand you can download the correct driver. The PCI bay in your machine is for wireless net only. I hope this helps.
I need help on the pci-modem issue. I have the Inspiron 5160 laptop. I had download the modem driver that located on the website (R87018.EXE) and ran the installation. It complaint that it couldn't find the driver for it. I guess the file I download wasn't correct but that is the only driver that listed for my inspiron 5160. My device manager still complaint about my pci-modem with a question mark. I don't know what else to do. Please let me know if you have any suggestion . I very appreciate your help.
Are you trying to load the drivers after a reload ? If not you modem may have failed. The resource CD should find the right driver. If you open the door on the side of the base, have a look and see what brand and type of modem you have. ( small card fitted with screws ) You can then download the correct driver.
