are you sure toy are plugging the phone jack into the modem ? Not into the RJ45 network connection ? The part where you say it disrupts the phone signal points to something like that...
Yes, I'm a dork and that was exactly my problem. My last computer was ancient and did not have any jack but the phone jack so I didn't even realize to look for something different. I plugged it in to the other jack, loaded my software, and everything works fine now. Thanks for the help.
