Modem Problem

When trying connect uisng a dialup connection through a Conexant HAD D330 MDC V.92 Modem on a Latitude D830 it get the following error message. "Digital line detected (PBX). Please verify that your phone line from your computer is directly connected to a standard analog modem or fax line." I know the has no issues as my older C640 connects with no issues whatsoever.

where is this?  the phone jacks in many office buildings are not the same type that your modem requires.  they dont work based on the same technology.

you need an analog (regular) connection for your modem to work.

check with the IT department of the office / phone system provider

Mike's right.

At a company I used to work, when they needed to use a dial-up modem on rare occassiions, they disconnected their fax machine and used its phone jack. The rest of the phones were digital phone lines.

This happens at home, at the problem was first noticed at work, it happens at work where my old C640 connects with no problems, it happens at my buddies house who is still on a dial up and has no issues. I have attempted everything I can think of to get this modem to work and nothing has helped. Dial up settings are correct and verified. Modem is installed and no malfunctions, modem test ran never detect a dial tone through modem helper.

You may choose to uninstall the digital line detect from add/remove programs.  there is probably an option to fix it, but i'd just remove it all together.

In all likelihood, by plugging in your modem into the work digital phone, you damaged the modem.

They sell products specifically to detect digital phone lines.

Calm down ieee488.

I think the digital line detect software is actually to save your modem in the situation ieee488 is describing, so while i wouldn't be surprised, i would be disapointed if this software is totally useless (if thats even what it does).

  • Can you get another modem to test with that laptop?
  • have you tried driver/bios updates?
  • you could uninstall and reinstall it from device manager as well.

I've unistalled digital line detect and got a " No dial tone detected" message. For the last time, the line is not a digital line it is analog. My older laptop connects through the same line with no problems. The new laptop doesn't connect there at home at a friends house, or anywhere through the modem.

for the last time, YOU damaged the modem by plugging it into a digital phone line at work

for whatever reason, your modem is fried/toast/kaput; it won't work NOW even when at home

your old modem may have been more tolerant and did not get damaged when it was plugged in at work but your new modem got damaged

you need a new modem; end of story

I am perfectly calm.

I was reacting to martynjenn's for the last time comment above. It is he/she who seems exasperated with us. The bold was to catch his/her attention since normal text did NOT.

I've stated before and state again that the line is in fact analog, I don't have an digital line at home, nor do i have one at work or any other location that I connect remotely from. The modem test fine according to modem helper, and dianogstic testing so no the modem isn't fried toast or burned out. The issue is and has alwasy been that it reads a analog line as a digital, and it doesn't detect a dial tone.

I uninstalled the digital line detect software early on, at which point the modem wouldn't detect a dial tone, same as when the software was installed except it no longer stated that it was a digital line. I find it extremely strange that it thinks an analog line (the only type of line it has ever been connected to) is a digital line.
