Correct what? Com1 is the hardware com port (the 9 pin DB connector on the rear of the machine), so the modem could be on any other Com port. Nothing wrong with it being on Com2.

I don't know of any possible way the modem itself could be affecting the IP lease time.

The IP lease time is the amount of time the server gives you access to a specific IP address.

More expertise in this area could probably be found on the Dimension - Networking board.

If the modem doesn't affect the IP Lease time, what does the IP Lease time do ?

Have a Dell Optiplex GX 1 that I got from the federal govt(my employer) to work at home.  It was always on a main line server and didn't have a modem.  I bought a US Robotics 56K internal and tried all the empty ports and the computer continues to say "can't locate modem".  I am not an expert on computers so can anyone explain step by step what I need to do to get it to locate it?  I have not uninstalled anything before installing because I didn't know what to look for.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks much in advance!

Hi -

I can't help you w your modem problems but I think it would be better if you started a NEW post.  That way, it won't be so confusing...only dealing w your problem.  Does that make sense?
