Modem Suddenly stops working any ideas?

B"H
Hi all,

I was in middle of using my comptuer today, and left for a couple of hours, when I came back the screen was off and I could not get it to come back on (from power saving or something). The Green light indicated the computer was on however. So I restarted the computer, and then my modem stopped working. I tried to dial a number and it says there is no dial tone when there really is one (I checked by attaching a phone to the wire, and now also used the same wire to connect my PCMCIA modem to the internet). Under Diagnostics I "Queried Modem" and the response was successful. Any ideas what might be the problem? I also uninstalled the driver and re installed, did not help, and also did a system restore to a few days back and still no go.

I am using an inspiron 8600 with a PCTEL 2304WT V.92 MDC modem.

I am using a PCMCIA modem for the time being but would really like to get this one back up and running.

Thanks in advance, Chaim

I would do a restore from yesterday and see if it works - if not, it could be damaged from a surge.

Yeah, I have a feeling maybe a surge, although I tried running Dell's "Modem Helper" and it said there was an error and asked if I would like it to be fixed, and it prompted me to put in the Dell Driver CD, I did so (the only one I have is called the "Drivers and Utilities" and I kept on getting an error message:

---------------------------
Dell Modem Helper
---------------------------
Please insert the CD labeled "Modem Helper By Dell", "Resource CD", or "Drivers and Utilities". Modem Helper will install the modem drivers from this CD. If this message keeps coming back then you are using the wrong CD.

To make things worse my FIREWIRE card also stopped working and I desperately need it to access my external HD and video editing. I'm lost, will post in the Firewire forum (if there is one :-(

I tried running the modem helper again and this time I got the following results:

==
Dial Tone Test Failed
There is a dial tone coming into the modem but the modem can not hear it.
Result Code: 70 - No Dial Tone At Modem
==

Any ideas what that means?
