Modem/IE Connection Problem

I have an Earthlink dial up account, and this past week (with no new hardware/software being installed) the internet connection has been causing problems.  What happens is the modem dials and connects to something, because I can still receive & send Emails and AOL Instant Messenger works, but it appears I am not connected to anything.  Web pages do not display in IE, and the Windows troubleshooter said pinging requests were not successful - that I was not connected to the internet.  This happened about two years ago, and Earthlink said to reinsall windows. Theyre no help - anybody know anything? Thanks.

Thanks for using the Dell Community Forum.
 
If you are able to send and receive e-mail messages we know the modem is working so the issue is software.  What version of Windows and what version if Internet Explorer are you using?

I fixed it yesterday, somehow the proxy settings were checked under Internet Explorer options. I have no idea how that happened, but it is working fine now. Thanks.
