Chmurrieta,

Installing a program such as NetNanny on the kids' computers will help you monitor what they are doing.  Your router may also be able to send you a log of activity for the computers on your network.  Such a log will tell you what websites were visited by users on each specific computer, not who actually tried to access the website.

As for protecting your computer from unauthorized access, be sure that the firewall is enabled, that file and print sharing are disabled, that the guest account is off and that you are using a strong password.  Do not use a password which will be easily guessed, such as the name of your pet, or your favorite color.  Use something like Acw8#rr5.  Something which has a mix of upper and lower case letters, numbers and symbols will make a strong password.

Hopefully, someone else will jump in with some additional suggestions.

Strong passwords with at least 10 characters whihc include 2 upper case, 2 numbers, and 2 specials are very hard to crack, not impossible but very hard.  Give the kids a limited type account with no download permissions and when they complain, just tell them you are trying to protect them, which is the truth.

And make sure that none of your folders/files are set to be shared.
