Moving files to laptop

A Dell tech recently helped me set up a direct 'network' by which I moved files from an old Dell to my new one - using a "cross-over cable. (No internet was involved; simply a connection between the two computers.) I would now like to pass on these files to my laptop.

Is there a document available to lead me through the steps?

The process was not difficult, but it included lots of little steps, & the tech (a wireless expert) seemed to be referring to some document to make sure we weren't missing something. I think I can do it myself, if I have the steps to follow.

Thanks

please list the two computers, and what kind of ports they have (firewire, ethernet, wireless, serial)  you can connect a LAN cable between your two computers if each has an ethernet port.  you can connect via wireless if you have a wireless router or both computers have wireless adapters.  you can do it via serial port as well, or through firewire.

The desktop is a Dimension 8400, the laptop is an Inspiron 8500. Both have ethernet connections. (I used a 'cross-over' cable to send files from my old Dimension 8100 to the 8400.) Both have WindowsXP Home Edition
