my headache is HERE too
Hi
I have a dimension 2400 I bought in April. I have a Broadcom 440x etc. network card in it and guess what??? Oh, you figured it out already. Yep, I can't use it to get online. I even bought a new cable modem when I was told the modem was bad (but it was not that old either).
But now I think it is the netcard since I again had problems last night and after pulling my remaining hair out - not much left since this whole mess started 3 weeks ago - redoing the router, redoing the wires, redoing the trying to hang upside down by my toes which never worked, I can get on using an old old netcard and disabiling the broadcom card.
I have downloaded that lspfix package but can't check it to see if it will work until the other computer on the network is done playing because it would mean enabling the broadcom card and that throws us both off. I did fail the network tool diagnostics for this old linksys card I am using since I could not ping myself.
Any other ideas? I am allegedly the technical support in the house, and both the ppl who do computer repairs in this town --- well should I say --- I don't want either one of them touching this computer!!!! As far as Dell support - don't know - tried it at the start of this disaster - at least the man I talked to didn't try to insult me like some other tech supports I have attempted to use (like I wasn't told how to use a mouse which was good!! or how to find device manager). Last night the ISP tech was a joke since he didn't even know about using ipconfig /flushdns and ipconfig /registerdns which had been a big help this past couple of weeks - he knew about release and renew but I was told to call them next time as they could check voltages etc. of the modem; hmm. --- yeah.

don't really know - sure didn't install a new netcard driver as I had not been to dell support to find drivers until after the first problem - I thought it was the modem at first - the ISP told me it was it and the two times they came out the system started working before they got here - something is very very fishy
I found another windsock 2 fix and have run it but won't try to reuse the broadcom netcard until later when I am the only one online

I had uninstalled the netcard more than a handful of times usually in safe mode then let it reinstall on restart.
I have currently -6.6 dBmV

You should be able to get at your modems setup page via Http://192.168.100.1 and see what the singal strength is. Anything within a -8 to +8 on Dba will be alright, but the closer to 0 the better. I would try uninstalling the card via the device manager and rebooting.

Okay, I wasn't careful. I took winsocks out of registry and well, did not get the directions written down on where the backup was, and how to fix it all.
So I reinstalled XP last night, again this morning, and again again this morning. I got hung up on the same spot each time for the Graphics card since I had downloaded an update for that from the microsoft site yesterday and it seems it did not pass the scrutinous microsoft XP seal of approval.
So now I have windows all updated, and everything running up to par except the netcard does not work STILL. I have the network up again (still) but have to use my old linksys netcard not the broadcom one. I guess this is why I had saved it (except that I needed it for ICS when the router was sick since I needed 2 netcards then).
But this morning when I got up (only to discover that the windows install was pretty shoddy and needed redone) the cable modem was again down even though 6 hours earlier I had left it up and running fine. I am running about -7 dBmV right now and the router is working. I am getting pretty tired of all the IPCONFIG commands as well as playing with the MAC clone on the router.
Now will my broadcom net card ever work again? I have not looked yet to see if it is part of the mother board but I suspect it is. I guess next trip to Staples will include another netcard (maybe I should resetup his old puter with the netcard on the mother board so I can steal one from the other PC when he is not looking). .

There is one update that will disbale some wireless cards, Netgear in particular. It is the update contained within KB Article 815485 and ends in xxx426 I believe.
If you have the mahicne up and running with the Linksys card. wouldn't it just be better to leave things alone?

I have to wait and see - will the cable modem act up or behave (for some reason the connection at the server does not show I am disconnected but I lose the signal)? will Dell furnish me with another net card since I just bought this CPU in April. It's not like this was a 2 or 3 year old CPU.
I was told it was the cable modem that was faulty. I bought another one, even though I will send back the old one. I bought that first one in March. It was not exactly a trivial task to just go down to the nearby 1 mile away computer store and buy one since I live in the middle of nowhere and even going in 30 miles there aren't many choices of vendors. Does everything now break down in a few months (and I don't mean just computer parts)?
