My solution to 700m Intel PRO 2100 connection problems...

As many of the 700m owners with IntelPRO 2100 internal cards, I've been experiencing difficulties seeing my home wireless router (Linksys), or constant drop-offs when seldomly it managed to connect.
I have tried many things and finally got it to work flawlessly now. It may -or may not- help others, but here it is:

Uninstall Intel PRO software
Delete Wireless Connection from Network Connection
Download new drivers for the 2100 mini PCI card (The one I used was v1.2.3.14, dated: 7.28.04 (I found it from a message in this board, file name is R86279).
Install the new driver (note that it installs the IntelPRO software again).
Reboot the computer
WindowsXP finds the new card and asks for a driver
Point out to the specific folder of the new driver
Once everything is set, allow only Windows to manage this wireless card.
Do not uninstall IntelPRO software, disable it using applications like Startup Manager, etc..., so that it wont load at start up (reasoning is below).
Manually set up the parameters for the connection (SSID, WEP, etc).
Reboot and voila! It connects in seconds and never drops....

While disabling IntelPRO from the start menu, I realized another .exe was added. It is called ZCfgSvc.exe and it is located under Windows/System32/ It was installed along with the IntelPRO and the new driver. I dont know if it is this little program or the new driver that does the trick, however I dont want to try o figure it out and complicate things again :) Note that I am not running the IntelPRO sofware, just the ZCfgSvc.exe in the background.

Hope this helps somebody out there, since it is very frustrating to have a built-in wireless card that does not connect to anything.

Cheers!

Sounds like the Intel drivers load their own version of the Wireless Zero Config service and uses that.  I'm curious to see if this will solve my problems with the 2200BG, as I get the same problem of the speed dwindling down to 1Mbps, regardless of if I uninstall the PROset software and let windows control the connection or if I let the PROset utility manage it.

Thanks for the info!

I hope it solves your problem as well. Keep us posted, since I would like to know if the Wireless ZeroConfig service that came with the new driver is doing the trick or not...
Good luck!
