Native Windows XP pppoe not working

Question

Windows XP SP2. Dim. 8250 Using built-in ether. card.  ADSL Modem is Speed Touch Home.  When I try to create a pppoe connection using the native Windows XP pppoe all seems to go well. However, when I try to connect it times out.   When I do exactly the same thing on my old Gateway everything works fine.   Morever, when I connect the Dell Dimension through my router to the Speed Touch Home modem everything works fine also.  In this case the pppoe is in the router, and it is not the native Windows XP pppoe.   This makes me suspect that the native pppoe in the Dell machine is messed up in some way.  I have compared the Dell and Gateway machines, and the set-ups seem to be exactly the same.  Since the Dell machine-Router-Modem combination works, it doesn't look like a connection problem.   Is it possible for me to re-install, refresh, or whatever the native pppoe in the Dell machine?   Many thanks for whatever help I get.

I found the problem.  On the computer with the problem the ethernet adapter card's speed/duplex settings would not work with the modem.  Once I set the adapters to auto everything worked.
