My terminology was not the best - the 3Com 3C905C is a network interface card, not a modem.

Hi Jim.If your going to switch platform from me to 98se ,you shouldn't because then you will have to look for all the drivers that win98se doesn't have ,you are better to go with win xp.       9 out of 10 ,the drivers you need are already on the win xp instalation disc.

Only thing with xp is you need minimum of 256 mb of rams to run properly

Good luck     shamoo

I couldn't agree more. I had a real learning experience. It started when I found a 160 GB at a good price. I soon discovered that only 137 GB could be used, and that only with an overlay. I solved the overlay problem by formatting the drive on another computer using XP and made a single NTFS partition a little under 137GB. I used my Partition Magic boot disk to change to FAT32. An error message occurred during the format change, but the drive seems to work ok. A much better choice would have been a 120GB drive, which was also on sale at that time.

The next step was to determine exactly what hardware was on my computer. Belarc Advisor gave me that info.

I then jumped into the driver problem. I finally gave up and reinstalled Win Me. I can't use XP because I'm using some software that doesn't work with Me. I'll solve the instability problem by keeping a current image of the C drive using Norton Ghost. There's plenty of room on the new drive for images.
