Also my son's pc has a desktop which has the card for the wirelss dlink and I am in need of another one. my questin to that is: IF i get a new router will my son's still work with the new wireless if its a diff brand of wirelss router? Also any suggestions on what is a good wireless router to purchase? I've heard D-Link is no good but I don't know. any suggestions/advice is greatly appreciated.

Before spending any money unnecessarily, lets check some settings on thw wireless setup. Make sure the cards are set to only connect to preferred networks. The Windows utility has a bad habit of always trying to find a better signal unless you make the above configuration change.
If you are using the Dlink utility, it should not stray form home so to speak. Check for updates for the router firmware and drivers for the cards.
If you want a new router, a lot of perople here will agree that Linksys has always been a strong performer. I have several of their products and currenly use the WRT54G model.

I was thinking of going with the lynskys. Do I do all this on the main desktop? the one that is directly connected to the router? I've not done much with the routers...they confuse me sometimes lol
thanks for posting

The desktop or any wired machine can setup the Linksys router from a web address:

username: leave blank

There should be a page in your router setup to update the router's firmware and be able to "browse to find the file on your computer. You need to do this with a wired connection NEVER WIRELESS There is too great a chance you will get *disconnected* during the flash.
You only update the router firmware once for each version. Unless you are referring to updating the firmware on your network cards....
It's either no username and *admin* for the password or *admin* for username and no password.
If you are still having problems, there should be a reset button on the router.

what model d-link router do you have?
The user name should be admin and the password should be blank.

you sons computer will not need a ethernet card, unless you are going wireless n....your laptop should be okay for your new router, if you go wireless n, then your laptop will have to wireless n stanard mini-card , or it will not work.
i have a neatgear wpn 824, mimo, i really like it... d-link makes some good routers-
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833150015
here is a good linksys,,,

also, the wrt54g linksys is very good router
this d-link gets good reviews, but its wireless n, so if your laptop mini-card doesn,t support wireless n,,you would have to upgrade your laptop network mini-card

start here.
http://support.dlink.com/products/revision.asp
determine the version of your routert then click on it it will take you to the download page with any firmware versions.
A bit of word on updating firmware.
First it will reset your router to factory settings. You will loose all your wireless setup info. so make sure you have it either saved or write it down to re-enter it
Second you should only update firmware over a wired connection never over the wireless side. you can brick the router this way.
third updating firmware is like updating a bios. care should be taken to make sure the updated really address a problem you are experiencing.. again you can brick the router..

I don't know what else to do unless I just need a new router, I'm getting tired of going from start up at excellant then to very good, good and fair and sometimes completely offline. It m akes no sense but seems to be excellant when I first go online then within a few mins it goes low. Never had this problem until the past couple months. I do really appreciate you all for helping me and giving me advice.
thanks alot
