you have a few options depending on your needs...
1) cellphone as a dialup modem: many cellphones can work as modems. you connect them via a special USB cable to your laptop and call an internet provider that you have a dialup account with. for many plans, such usage only burns normal minutes. this can work well with plans that have unlimited nights and weekends and free long distance. the downsides are that the speeds are often slow and the area will need to have digital coverage.
2) cellular internet service provider: you can buy a special pc-card for your laptop that basically acts as a cellphone. it will give you decent speeds, but varries in speed and availability by area. this option is expensive both for the hardware and the monthly fee, but you can check places like verizon and see for yourself. generally with these cards, your internet service provider is your cell company.
3) wifi hotspots: if the places you travel to happen to have wifi hotspots then you may be able to get high-speed internet for free or for a fee. you'll need an 802.11b/g wireless card, which is cheap and commonly installed in many notebooks. this won't work on the rode, but might be where you stay for the night.
