Thank you, Europa303! No, there is no item "1". I thought that was odd, too. I will do as you suggest and try to connect first. That won't be for a few days until the internet software arrives. I will post if I have any problems. Thanks for your kind comments. I wanted to be sure I documented everything I did for posting this message but also to retrace my steps just in case disaster struck! :-)

I believe you have downloaded and done (R52043)  exactly what needs to be done.  My only question is why there is a 2 at the end of your Device Manager item.  I presume there is no item before that which would be the "1".  If that turns out to be a problem you could delete the item from Device Manager and Windows will find it upon a restart, and since the driver is already loaded this should be pretty routine.  But connect to the internet first and give it a try.

Your post is a classic example of someone doing their homework first, then giving full details and asking a clear and concise question.  You are to be commended.

You're very welcome.  If your broadband account is already active and you have the modem you should try connecting without installing any software.  I am not an advocate of installing ISP software if it is not absolutely necessary, but some forum members imply it is necessary.  It has never been necessary for me with both Mediacom cable and BellSouth DSL.  Good luck to you!

hi I have the same problem JTberk2 had - yellow alert next to the ethernet controller in device manager. I have a dell latitude 510 tho. Can you tell me how to identify and locate the correct driver?

thanks

opaz

ps - i got it 'refurbished' from ebay and i don't have a service number so I think I can't use dell.com?

You can log onto "dell.com" and get tech specs on any make and model. You don't have to have a service tag number to do that. From there, once you find the item you are looking for, you can go to the support center and do a search and hopefully you will find what you are looking for. That is what I did and it worked.
