Need some suggestions and help
I have a desktop and laptop. The desktop is in the kitchen. I want to move it to another room which doesn't have a phone line. The laptop is wireless. It would be difficult for me to run a phone line to this "new" room. I have a router/modem through verizon. This is plugged into the back of the CPU through a ethernet cord and inot the phone jack in the kitchen.
How do I go about getting this wireless once moved into the "new" room? I went to staples today and they showed me something to buy. It was like a memory stick. They said that I may need to contact verizon to get help with this but I'm not sure.
Any help that anyone can give is appreciated.

The memory stick-like device you are talking about is just an antenna to receive the wireless signal from your router/modem that your laptop is able to receive with its builtin antenna.

I don't understand what you mean. You will be connected WIRELESSLY just as your laptop is now.

If you have DSL and your router/modem from Verizon has wireless capability, the modem/route stays in the room with the phone jack. Your desktop with the new USB wireless antenna moves to the new room.

Ah, I understand now. Just to make sure:
Right now you have: wall jack -> modem -> computer
If you also have a wireless router then what you want to do is set it up like this: wall jack -> modem -> router -> computer(s) via network cable (oversized phone line looking connection) or wireless
You will need to reset the modem (unplug all cables, especially power, for at least 5 minutes) so it will talk to the router. Connect the modem to the WAN (or Internet) port on the router using a network (aka, ethernet) cable. Once you've made sure the desktop can get out to the internet through the router using a network cable you can add the wireless adapter to the desktop and move it to wherever you want (assuming you can get a wireless radio signal there from your router).
Did that make sense?

Ok, sorry to be a bit thick headed here but I am totally computer illiterate! This is why I come here!
So, I can leave the modum in the kitchen where desktop is currently. Leave is plugged into the phone jack in the kitchen? But the other end is plugged into the CPU.
I want to take the desktop and move it to the dining room where there is not a phone jack. Purchase the wireless program. Install on the desktop and with the modum in the kitchen still it should now turn the desktop into wireless. Have I got this right so far?
Or of course the easiest way would be for the hubby to just run a phone line through the house to the diningroom. :)

I am confused by your first post in which you that your laptop is wireless implying that you are able to get internet on it currently. Apparently this is not so.
Anyhow, I have Verizon DSL. Since you mention that you have a DSL modem that is also a router, setting up wireless to your desktop will be a bit of a challenge for you. You might want to look into HomePlug devices which uses the power lines to get internet signal from your router/modem to the desktop in the new room.
Home Plug device , just plug and play

Yes, this is true. To make your life, easier look into these Home Plug devices. Several companies make them including Netgear and Actiontec.

I guess because I can't figure out why I need a phone jack. Right now the desktop is plugged into a phone jack. The room where it will be going doesn't have a phone jack and its too much of a hassle to put one in. The whole phone jack thing is what's messing me up.

Than I'm totally confused as to why you are confused.
Why would you think that you can't set up your desktop to use your router/modem as your laptop is doing right now ??????
