I have the linksys router and love it. Others may not. But, don't use the desktop at all to setup the wireless if the laptop has the internal NIC card where you can get access by plugging the line in from the cable modem to the laptop. You can use the laptop hard-wired first to setup the router. Once the router is setup then remove the cable from the router to the laptop and setup wireless. One thing I suggest is to not use the software that came with the Linksys router if you plan on using a secured wireless network.

Curious about your comment to get a new desktop. Just format and reload the OS. Clean as new.
