Need wireless help for Inspiron 1000

When veiwing wireless connection status on my laptop it indicates that I have a strong signal strength and am connected.  However when attempting to open internet explorer it says that it is working offline, I cannot get it to work online.  Can anyone help.

Do you have a cable or a dsl modem connected to the router?  Do you have any other computers on the network that can connect to the internet through the router, either by a wired ethernet connection or by a wireless connection?  As a troubleshooting step, can your Inspiron 1000 connect to the internet through the router by a wired ethernet connection?  Answeres to these questions will help us narrow down the possible causes of the problem.

Hi Steve,

I have connection through cable. The desktop, which uses the same connection, works fine.  We also have another Inspiron 1000 in the household with wireless connection that works fine.   I have previously used wireless with my Inspiron 1000 with no problem and have never hooked it up to anything else.  Should I still try to connect to the internet through the router by a wired ethernet connection and if so what exactly does that mean?

Thanks
Darlene

If it also can't connect by ethernet, then it tells us that the problem is likely a software configuration problem on that particular computer.  If it can connect by ethernet but not wireless it tells us that their is something wrong witht the wireless hardware or software and we can narrow our problem solving to those issues.  You have already eliminated the problem being with the router or modem, since other computers can connect.

Hi Steve,

I tried connecting the ethernet to the laptop and it still did not work.  I also tried using my wireless card in the other laptop, that laptop still recieved internet access so it's not the card therefor do you think it has something to do with the software configuration which still doesn't make sense to me because in the past the wireless connection had worked. Is there anything else I can try?

Thanks,
Darlene

Try downloading and running winsockfix for Windows XP from the Here.  That should fix a general software problem.
