NET.EXE Error in EXE file

I am currently using two computers, one a Dell Dimension 4100 and the other a Gateway 2000 G6-226. Both have network adapters, and the two are connected. I use a crossover cable to send information between the two. I use Windows 98 Second Edition on both.

Neither detects either themself or the other. I receive this error (or something like it) when booting up on the Dell:

The Gateway has no error message when booting up but still detects nothing.

 

My friend suggested using a custom IP address and subnet mask, I entered correctly (192.168.0.XXX and 255.255.0.XXX) but it changed nothing.

 

All proper components are installed (TCP-IP, NDISWAN, two clients, file sharing, Dial-Up adapter, Dial-Up Adapter #2, etc). Please help!
