Netgear WNR2000

Hello Everyone!

I recently purchased a laptop from Dell.  They sent me the Netgear WNR 2000 Wireless Router.  When I purchased my computer, Windows 7 was installed.  I have tried to run the setup (CD) on my lap top and it tells me that I have an unsupported operations system.  I have made several attempts to rectify this issues with Dell support, they were no help at all and told me to contact a support unit that would charge me or contact Netgear for a device.  Netgear of course will not respond to any attempts for customer service with this matter.

Has anyone else had the same problem?  How did you take care of the problem?  Did anyone find a device that would allow the use of this product with Windows 7?

Any information that anyone could get to me would be greatly appreciated as I am ready to send the whole order back and will have to do so within a couple days.

Thanks in advance.

Melissa

you really do not need the setup disk except if it has the manual. In fact you will learn a lot more doing it the manual way. I am just going to tell you the basics, you will need to pencil in the details from the manual. You can also download a manual from the manufacturer of the router.

Turn off the router, unplug all other lan cables except for lan cable going to the pc you will use to configure the router, now turn the router on, in win 7 you need a command prompt, not sure in win 7 in all the previous MS OS's you type cmd in the run box and hit enter, you should get a DOS window. Type ipconfig/all hit enter or ok. You will see all your ip addresses. (  actually you should do an ipconfig/release then ipconfig/renew before the ipconfig/all) look for the gateway ip, write it down. start internet explorere, probably will error, in the address bar enter in the gateway ip, hit enter. soon you should get the embedded web page of the router, you will need to enter in the admin and password to enter, this will be in the manual or on the bottom of the router.  Get your wireless working, then set encryption, do not use WEP, Use WPA2.

Melissa,

I located this from Netgear.

Can't Use the Router CD to Configure?

Problem:

Workaround:

Symptoms

  • The CD that shipped with the router cannot be read, or
  • Errors occur when running the configuration program,
  • You are not using the Windows operating system.

With some newer routers such as the WGR614v6, as long as the router is connected to the computer, the Configuration Assistant will start by itself as soon as you open a broswer. If this happens, just follow the Configuration Assistant instructions.

Otherwise, your browser may not support the Configuration Assistant.. To configure the router, log on to its Web interface. Open a broswer and type http://192.168.0.1 or http://192.168.1.1 (depending on your router model). The default username is admin and the default password is password, or on older routers 1234. Click Setup Wizard and follow on-screen instructions to configure the Internet connection.
