Network Adapter Dissappearing?
For some reason when my dell vostro goes to sleep when I wake it back up the network adapter is missing and I have no connectivity. When I go to device manager at that point the network adapter does not even show up. I end up having to reset my Verizon wireless router and turn off and unplug the computer several times for it re-aquire the adapter.
Didn't know if anyone has had similiar issue.
Thanks,

jklk,
I am only seeing the Broadcom NetLink (TM) Gigabit Ethernet adapter. If you have the wireless adapter installed, I'm thinking it may not be seated properly. Also check to make sure everything looks connected properly.
I see that the operating system was installed on 8/9/2011. If this was the original install date, and the desktop is under warranty, then contact Dell Tech Support.

jklk,
If Vista/Windos 7, try running Finding System Information REMOVE YOUR PRODUCT ID and post the rest of the information back here.
What type of security and channel are you using in your wireless router?

I'm not using a wireless adapter I'm just plugging the ethernet cable directly into the Verizon Wireless router. I'll check with Dell Tech support too.
Thanks

Running into the same problem with my XPS 8300. Network adapter goes missing on system startup or after going to sleep. The adapter eventually reappears after a random number of reboots.
It happened once a couple of months after purchase then was fine for a few weeks. Now it's happened a couple days in a row.
Running the factory-installed Windows 7 Home Premium, 64-bit. I downloaded the latest Broadcom driver which was already installed but reinstalled anyway. That didn't help. Going to have to contact Dell support.

It seems to be a known issue will Dell and this network adapter. Had same problem on my XPS 8300, after a month of going back-and-forth with Dell, they replaced my motherboard. Did that fix my problem, not totally. Now it loses connection when the computer is turned off for a while, but it does connect when you turn the computer back on, something it didn't do before. But I have a feeling that it's only a matter of time before it back doing the same thing.
Dell needs to find out the problem and get this fixed, because I purchased a computer that I expect that the hardware should work 100% of the time. and right now I don't have that.... But Dell has my money.

You need to change a setting for the network adapter. Open the properties for the adapter and select "Allow windows to turn this device off to save power." Then windows knows to restart the adapter when it wakes from Sleep or Hibernation.

That's not the problem. I currently have it set "not" to save power", but it shouldn't matter. When I received my computer and all other computers I have, when you turn it off, the light stays on showing that it is still connected to the router. But for some reason, and I'm sure Dell knows why, it shuts off after some time. The forum where this is being talked about, there is some info linking it to a cold motherboard. Which I think maybe part of the problem as I have my computer in the basement and the temp. sometimes drops to the low 60's. Won't be able to test this out for sure until summer weather comes and the temp. stays a litter warmer.

Tried all different power settings and it still randomly fails to detect the network adapter, both on start up and wake. I suspect I'll have to get them to replace the motherboard.
Sad thing is, I bought a Dell XPS years ago and it died just a month or two after purchase (would not power on). I had to have them replace the motherboard on it.

We have at least 10 of these Vostro 460s. Network adapter not found sometimes. It acts like it could be related to power management, but I have turned everything I can find off, and I will still have the same issue if the PC sits for a day or two turned off. When it boots again, no NIC. If anyone has seen this and has a fix please post. I'm only having this problem with 4 out of the 10 vostros we have.

The only fix is to buy a new card and install it in an open slot, then disable the on-board NIC. Or go the way of having the motherboards replaced, but be aware that may not fix the problem. I had mine replaced, and fixed half the issue. But I figured that if I keep having problems, at least I gave Dell the chance to fix it before I contact the BBB...

Dell support had me try reloading the default options on the BIOS setup. When that failed to fix the problem they sent a tech to my home to replace the motherboard (the machine was still under warranty). So far the network adapter has been working and I've had no new problems.
Just on a side note, I had considered getting a NIC card to put in but because of the layout on the motherboard, my video card covers the only available PCI slot so there was no place to put it. Instead, I borrowed a USB to Ethernet adapter which worked just as well as the built in one - even for online gaming.
They are a little more expensive than a NIC card but if for some reason you can't can't use an internal card, or need a temporary solution, it's an excellent alternative. Just be sure to get one capable of Gigabit speeds (I had an ASIX USB 2.0 to 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet LAN Network Adapter).

Anyone figure out what the issue is? This just started happening to a couple Dell xps 8300's that i can only support REMOTELY the users tell me they come in from the weekend and they they both say they are missing network adapter drivers. Network adapters, in device manager is blank. What is happening to these!? I've been having the user do a system restore and then reinstall the driver, which works, but only for a short period of time. I suspected a windows update at first, but it is still happening after i have disabled auto update. These computers have been running for 3 months without any issues, and they both started doing it at the exact same time.
Going to disable sleep mode and tell the user to stop shutting off the computer for now.
