Network Adapter Driver problem.

My brother's dell seems to have internet problems.

He's running an Inspiron E1705 with Windows XP Media Center Edition Version 2002 Service Pack 2.

And what has happened is that all his network drivers cannot be loaded because they are corrupted or missing. I checked in the system32/drivers folder and they're there, so I'm not sure what to make of it.

The following devices are all nonfunctional due to the above problem:

  • 1394 Net Adapter
  • Broadcom 440x 10/100 Integrated Controller
  • Broadcom 440x 10/100 Integrated Controller - Packet Scheduler Miniport
  • Dell Wireless 1390 WLAN Mini-Card
  • Dell Wireless 1390 WLAN Mini-Card  - Packet Scheduler Miniport
  • Direct Paralllel
  • Hamachi Network Interface (I don't think this really matters, but for sake of entirety)
  • RAS Async Adapter
  • WAN Miniport (IP)
  • WAN Miniport (IP) - Packet Scheduler Miniport
  • WAN Miniport (L2TP)
  • WAN Miniport (PPPOE)
  • WAN Miniport (PPTP)

As everything else on the computer is completely functional except the internet devices, would anyone have any idea about the problem he's having? Or any tips?

Thanks!

Euphrosyne,

If this was recently installed, then he need to install the drivers in this order.

How to Install Drivers in Microsoft® Windows® on Dell Systems

Since the operating system was re-installed did you remember to go to drivers and downloads, enter your service tag(DO NOT POST SERVICE TAG here or your post will get deleted, since it contains your personal information), and install these drivers in this order.

:emotion-55: Hint :emotion-55: When downloading the drivers, make a folder for each drivers and name it with the device it belongs with to make it easier to install them in the proper order.

Desktop System Software or Notebook System Software
Chipset or SMBus driver
Processor Driver (if applicable)
Video
Audio (sound)
Input Drivers (keyboard/mouse)
Modem
Network Card

QuickSet(Laptop only)

Why not SP3?

It was installed two years ago, actually, so I don't believe that's the problem. As for SP3, I don't know why he hasn't updated, but I suppose that'd be good to get.

His internet was working smoothly one moment and then he put his computer into standby. When he got back and started it up, the internet suddenly didn't work and the devices were malfunctioning. Any ideas?

Euphrosyne,

Restarting the computer should bring everything back. The computer has a setting that turns off devices to save power. I have tweaked these devices by doing the following to my USB Ports as well as my ethernet adapter and wireless card.

Go to device manager(right click my computer, left click properties, left click hardware, left click device manager)

Go to the USB Controller section and click the + sign.

Go to each USB Root Hub and right click on it, left click properties, left click power management. Uncheck the box, allow computer to turn off this device to save power.

Restart your computer.

--------------------------------------

Go to device manager(right click my computer, left click properties, left click hardware, left click device manager). Click on Network and then right click on your wireless adapter, left click properties, power management. Uncheck the box, allow computer to turn off this device to save power.

I'm afraid that hasn't done anything to fix the problem, as windows cannot load the drivers (the drivers are still "lost" or "corrupted").

I tried unchecking all of them and restarted, but everything's still the same. Why else would this happen?

Thank you for your help so far. Hope there's a solution. :D

Euphrosyne,

I remember seeing this article and maybe this is the solution.

Euphtosyne,

Unless powering off the IPS Modem/Router and his wireless router for 30 seconds, then turn them back on.

Did he setup the wireless router?

Maybe try these Recommended Wireless Router Settings.

Ah, thanks, but that didn't seem to fix it. Something seems to be wrong with all the devices he has for connecting to the internet, and I don't know what to do.

Would there be anything that causes a system-wide shutdown/disable/malfunction of all wireless hardware on his dell?

Euphtosyne,

Start, all programs, accessories, right click on command prompt. Letf click run as administrator. Type

ipconfig /all     (space between the g and /)

Look for the default gateway. Put this address(should look something like 192.168.1.1) in the address bar of Internet Explorer. It should ask you for the username and password. Enter the Username and password and then you'll be able to change your settings.

Username = admin(for most routers)(unless it was changed)

Password= blank or password(it can vary on router to router)

Our router has been set up for quite some time, and the internet on my laptop works perfectly fine, so I don't think the router is causing all his devices to malfunction.

If I wanted to change the router settings, how would I do it? I see the recommended settings, but I don't know how to access them.
