Network Adapter Not Detected

I'm in the process of installing windows 2000 pro on a friends' Dell Inspiron 8000.  When the installation was complete, the network adapter was not found in the Device Manager menu.  I do not know which chipset this laptop uses, and I believe the network adapter is a Actiontec LAN/56K combo.  Any help would be most appreciated, as this is rather urgent.  Thank you.

Did you install the network adapter drivers?

You can take the memory cover off and look at the combo MiniPCI card to see what type/brand you have.
