Network Adapter Not Detected

Question

I'm in the process of installing windows 2000 pro on a friends' Dell Inspiron 8000.  When the installation was complete, the network adapter was not found in the Device Manager menu.  I do not know which chipset this laptop uses, and I believe the network adapter is a Actiontec LAN/56K combo.  Any help would be most appreciated, as this is rather urgent.  Thank you.

Did you install the network adapter drivers? i8600 1.5GHz, WUXGA, 1GB 2dimm, 128 Mb ATI Radeon 9600, 60 Gb 5400 RPM HD, DVD+RW, True Moble 1300, Microsoft MN-700 base station, Windows XP Home

You can take the memory cover off and look at the combo MiniPCI card to see what type/brand you have.
