Network Adapter not Enabled

I have a Demension 4700 that is connected to Comcast High Speed Internet via a Motorola 5101 cable modem and a Belkin Wireless G router. All worked fine for weeks, but recently the desktop cannot connect to the internet. My laptop still connects to the wireless network and works great. The connection icon on the desktop shows a 100 Mps connection, but I cannot connect to the internet. There are two network adapters shown on the desktop. One is an Intel ProSet 100 that is working fine. The other is designated 1394 and has no IP address etc. When I attempted to repair the connection, I get an error message that says the network adapter is not enabled and tells me to contact my network manager, which of course is me. How do I get to a place where I can log in and enable the adapter so that I can repair the TCP/IP protocol?:smileysad:

The 1394 adapter is your firewire port, not normally used in networking, although Windows considers it as a network device.   It has nothing to do with your problem.   It is unclear from your message how you are trying to connect to the router (wireless or wired etherent).  Please explain.   Intel ProSet is a utility program, not a a network adapter, so this confuses the issue more.  To help clarify these issues, first go into Device Manager and expand the listing for Network Adpaters.   Please tell us what devices are listed there.   Then, open Network Connections and tell us what network connections are listed there.

Thanks for the help. Device Manager shows two network adapters: Intel Pro/100 VE and 1394. Network Connections lists the same two. The desktop is connected to the Belkin Wireless G router with an ethernet connection. I've tried to connect directly to the cable modem through the ethernet connection with no results. My laptop works perfectly through the wireless connection.

When you make the change between a router connected to the cable modem and the computer connected to the cable modem, it is absolutely essential that you do a complete reset of the network every time you make the change.   Cable modems remember the last device to which they were connected and will never connect to a different device until the reset is done.  The reset involves shutting everything off, waiting for 5 minutes, then turning on the modem and waiting a few more minuters, then turning on the device that is directly connected to the modem.

Try the following to help troubleshoot the problem.  On the computer with the problem, go to Start > Run and type cmd then click OK. In the command prompt window that opens, type ipconfig /all then hit the enter key. Write down the output from this command or select it and save it to a txt file, then copy this output into a reply to this message.

I am happy to report that I am now communicating from my desktop using my Comcast high speed connection. I restarted everything and ran my cable modem software again and voila! I appreciate the time and thought that went into your assistance.

Cheers
