Network adapter problem on Optiplex GXa

Hey guys and gals, got a problem with the Optiplex GXa I've been working on.  Over Christmas break I got high speed cable internet installed.  I also set up a home network.

The network works great with my Inspiron 1100 hooked up with a Belkin wireless card to the Belkin router.  Our other computer, an HP Pavilion 540N desktop is hooked with ethernet cable to the router, and it works great as well.

However, I'm stumped as to why my Optiplex GXa can't "see" the network or internet.  I'm using a D-Link wireless PCI card.  I wonder if the problem might be with the software, but I'm not sure.  Here's the problem in detail:

Per card directions, I have installed the drivers first.  Leave the CD in the drive and power down the computer.  Then install the card.  Boot the computer back up.  It finds the new hardware, but a wizard never appears.  However, the little D-Link logo icon appears in the toolbar, as it should.  The wireless network connection icon also appears in the toolbar, and it receives a signal.

However, it does not see my home network.  I have checked that all settings on the other 2 computers are exactly the same as on the GXa.  It also will not let me use the internet.

All 3 machines are running XP.  The laptop has pro, the desktops have home.  The GXa has a 300MHZ P2 w/256 MB RAM.  It meets the cards system requirements.  I have tried installing the card in different slots, but to no avail.  I have also disabled the modem and the old ethernet card, which came on the system, in the device manager.

I've done everything I can think of...any thoughts/ideas/suggestions are greatly appreciated!

Adam

How do I disable the NIC in the Bios?

I'm in, but it will not let me change from ON to OFF

It may be as simple as disabling the onboard Ethernet in the bios, Rebooting and then running INETWIZ.EXE again and say use the LAN.

XP may be confused as to which LAN is the one that routes out to the internet.

CTRL ALT ENTER gets into bios.

ALT P changes to the next page

The up and down arrows move the cursor

The Space Bar turns NIC ON, PXE, OR OFF

ALT B reboots and saves the changes.

You have a pansonic 2.4 Ghz cordless phone or some other device that is interfereing with the 802.11b.

Try it wired and I bet it still works fine.

This is a belkin problem not a Gxa problem.

Actually, the problem is with the software for the adapter.  It's not installing correctly. I have a friend who has the same adapter, and we determined there's something wrong with the software on it.  I'm just gonna return the card and get a different brand.  Probably Belkin, since that's what all my other network stuff is (bought this D-Link cause it was cheap...should have known I'd get what I paid for.)

Thanks!

Finally resolved my problem this morning.  Finally got through on the phone to D-Link's tech support, and we got it up and running in no time.  Seems XP requires you to go through a couple steps that aren't in the instruction manual.

But everything works fine now...thanks to all who offered help!

Oops, sorry I never posted what the fix was.  Unfortunately, now I can't remember exactly what I did.  But if you clal their phone support they can tell you right away what to do to fix it.

Sorry bout that.

I guess it is my luck that I have the same or similar problem, and I have determined it to be in XP.  After reading this entire thread, I get to this point and ADT says I am right.... except he does not say what the fix was.  Oh well, I guess being right is supposed to feel good.
