Try running the diagnostics on your network adapter.  It should be at Start > All Programs > Broadcom > Broadcom Advanced Controll Suite.

Hi Steve,
I have the broadcom advanced control suite, which I installed earlier today, and it comes back with passes for all, exept the on chip CPU, which it say: Unsupported test for BCM440X.

Any ideas??? :smileysurprised:

Oh, it is the Broadcom 440x model onboard NIC.

Kind regards,

What is the network cable plugged into on the other end?  Do the link lights on both connections light up when the cable is plugged in at both ends and both devices are powered on?  If you hold the connector in the ethernet jack on the computer does the "unplugged' message go away?

Hi Volcano11,
I should of explained myself better. All lights are light up, both ends and the rj45 is fully inserted into the NIC.

At the other end is a Linksys router and its fine, with lights flashing at both ends! :smileyindifferent:

I can quite literally pull out the cable, laptop end and plug in my compaq, and connect immediately to the net.

Even with firm pressure, it always says: A network cable is unplugged.

Keeping in mind, that this very same cable works in my other laptop. I am running short of ideas!

Kind regards,

Try the following.  Open Network Connections, right click you local area connection and select Properties.  Click on the Configure button then on the Advanced tab.  Check to see that the Speed & Duplex is set to Auto.  If it is, try some of the other settings to see if you can find one that works.

Intermittent problems like this are the most difficult to solve.  It must either be the network cable or the RJ45 connector on the motherboard of the laptop.  Sorry I can't be of more help.

To be honest, its got to be the RJ45 input on the motherboard, as I have tried various other cables, all of which work fine on my other computers (2 desktops and 1 other laptop).

Thanks for your help Volcano.

Kind regards,
