Network Cable Unplugged-NOT!

I have a Dimension 4600 with an integrated NIC. I am running XP professional. Out of the blue, I now get a message that my cable in unplugged. I plugged the computer end of the cable into my laptop and it works fine. I also tried a new cable, that didn't work. I bought a new NIC card and installed it, disabling the integrated NIC. The new NIC card could not detect a connection. I called Dell and then ran me through some hardware tests. They were able to get the lights to come on near the jack but could not get connectivity. They told me it was a software problem. I reinstalled the original drives-didn't help. I downloaded an updated driver and it still didn't work. Lastly, I went in to the advanced settings of both NIC cards and manually changed them from Auto Detect to either 10 or 100 with full duplex. None of these options worked either.

What are my options now? Do I have to do a complete reinstall of XP?

Did you try the Poewer Managment setting for the network card?

right click on my computer.left click on properties.click on the hardware tab .click on device manager.
click on the + sign next to network adaptor and right click on your network card (ex. intel PRO/1000 Network Conection).left click on properties
click on power management.

Are you running WinXP on your laptop? If you are not, try disabling the Windows firewall and any other third party firewalls (Norton Internet Security, McAfee, etc.) on your desktop? (DIM 4600)

I tried disabling the virus protection. Still no luck. There is no power management tab availbale in the properties section. Both my laptop and 4600 are running XP. Any idea's what it could be?

I tried setting the NIC to 100 full duplex and now port lights up on the back of the computer when I boot up. However, there still is no connection to the LAN. If I use any other setting, including Auto-detect, the port light will not light up when booting.

Glad to see I'm not going crazy, since someone else is having this problem. I have a Dimension 9100 with integrated NIC that has been doing this same thing. Dell tech support tells me it's a software problem, or a problem with my DSL modem. Well, the NIC may be functioning properly ... but after several days of pulling out my hair, it just seems there *must* be some sort of physical problem with the way the card is "integrated." At times, I'm able to get a dsl connection just fine ... like now. But on an all too regular basis the red X pops up on on the connection icon in my system tray and I'm out of luck. In "my network connections" it says a network cable is unplugged ... I sit and watch that connection in the window as it pops back and forth between connected and unplugged, red X and no red X. Frustrating, huh? I end up fixing it by jiggling the cable (which I've switched, too) and running the diagnostic tools repeatedly.

best bet is to ask for a supervisor or a level 3 tech

I am having a similar problem but not quite as bad. I have a Dimension 3000 desktop computer. I have set up a home network using a linksys router. It worked fine for over 6 months. The computer that I am having trouble with connects to the router using a wired connection from an itegrated NIC card. Dell checked out the hardware for the NIC card and it passed all tests, they said it was a software problem as you have been saying. I tried replacing the wire but it was not bad. I have a green light at the source of the NIC card. The problem that I am having with the Home network is that I can see my two other computers on the network but when I try to gain access to the shared folders and printer it says that I do not have access and need to see the admistrator even though I have administrative rights. When I go onto my other two computers they see and can gain access to the shared files and printers on the problem computer. I have run network diagnostics on the home network and the linksys router and all tests were passed. I moved my wireless USB connector to this machine and then everything worked file, where it could see and get to the other computers on the network. The problem is with the wired connection to the home network. Dell wanted 99 dollars to try to fix the problem. I could buy a USB wireless card for half that since my router is both wired and wireless. I know that this is a work around but it would save me half the cost. It seems curious to me that so many people with the integrated NIC card are all experiencing similiar problems.
