Network card not recognised

I was asked to reinstall windows XP on a friends Dell Optiplex 170L and she gave me all the disks after her kids had put the machine into such a state that it would not boot. I can not get the network card to be recognised. In Device Manager it does not list Network adapters but what it does list under Other devices with a big yellow question mark is Ethernet Controller. I have tried the drivers on the disk and I have even downloaded some but it can't seem to find the adapter. Can anyone advise where to go from here. I don't think she ever used the network adapter on the pc she used a wireless one which I also can not get to work.

You more than likely did not reinstall the chipset driver for the system. This should be the first thing to install after OS reinstalltion. The chipset drivers enable the chipset in the computer to be able to recognize and communicate with the various devices in the system.

for the wireless there are two listed. both of them can be found here.
