network card not recognized

Had to install a new HD on my 8300. After installing XP, I can't access the Internet with my ethernet cable plugged into my network card. I checked Device Manager and there are some weird looking entries with big yellow question marks:

Under ?Other Devices:
?Ethernet controller
?PCI simple communications controller
?SM bus controller
? video controller

Under Network Adapters:
1394 adapter

and nothing else.

I have Dell Resource CD but don't know how to use it. I tried installing a few drivers from that but don't know if I did a bad thing or not.

Thanks for any advice you can give me.

The Resource CD will scan your system and put a check mark next to the drivers that need to be installed.  It will list those device drivers in plain English such as Video, network Adapter, audio, etc.  These are executable files so not much is required on your part however there is one suggestion I would like to make.

When you extract the driver for you video card, the file will look something like R58370 for example.  The program will create folders but I like to identify those folder because six months from now you will not remember what R58370 is.  I use this system:

C:\Dell\Drivers\Video\R58370  That way I know exactly what is what.  When you extract the file, there will be an executable program so just the program and the drivers will install.  You will need the Chip Set, Video, Audio, and Network Card drivers.  The 1394 adapter is your firewire card so it is good to go.

When I insert the Resource CD, it doesn't start scanning anything. So do I have to do something to get it to start? Also, what is the chipset and why is it so important? Good idea about the folders. I'm going to do that ASAP.

Thanks

Well, let me back up, there is a program inside the Resource CD so find the .exe inside that CD.
