I'm not sure why you are getting the messages in the diagnostic that the network adapter failed.  If indeed it did fail the diagnostics (it gets a proper IP address, yet is says it failed - I don't understand that), then you could troubleshoot further by reinstalling the network card drivers and/or temporarily installing a PCI network adapter.  Report back what you find.

Norton Internet Security should work fine with your computer.  Tech Support is just too lazy to figure out why you need to do.   You just need to configure the Norton firewall properly so that it willl allow local network traffic.  Read the manual (it should be on the CD that came with your computer).

Thanks for responding, Steve

Upon recommendation of Dell Tech. Support, I have now completely uninstalled Norton Internet Securities 2004, rather than just disactivating it.  Now the problem is completely gone and the Home Network works perfectly as it did earlier days with my old Compaq.

The Dell Tech. Supporter tells me, this problem is known  to them and he does not know how to resolve it other than just not using Norton !! (so I wonder why they sell this product on their own pcs?)

I will enquire with Norton and let you know.  Or do you have any Idea?
