Network cross cable doesn´t work

Hi
2 computers, OS XP Pro, twisted cable, uninstalled Norton security, every ping works, Both computers can see each other, but the network doesn´t work. I´ve tried running the guide for shared internetconnection and without. (56K modem not DSL)I´ve tried deactivated win firewall on one comp, on both and on none. I wanted to transfer files, but the guide says it can´t find the network. When I try to copy and paste, the comp says "no longer available" after a short while. Some sort of timeout.
What am I doing wrong? Grateful for hints.

did you enable file sharing?

Yes, file sharing was enabled.

As I said the pingcommand seemed to work OK, both manually and when
XP:s
guide tested it. But I realised the guide showed 2 networkadapters in
one of the computers. There is only one, but there is a partition with
win98 and I suppose win 98 hasn´t been started since I changed
networkadapter. I thought hardware disappeared when the computer was
started without it and didn´t think about different OS.
Anyway,it said OK, but when I expanded the OK line, there was a red
note
regarding the IPadress. There were also a green line, "no DHCP". The
green lines for the nonexisting networkadapter told me that there was
DHCP, so I switched back to the old networkadapter. And now the network
kind of works. Kind of, cause we can play games, share files and so on,
but I can´t see both computers on one of them and that file
transferguide never worked, but as I don´t need it I don´t care
anymore.

thanks for trying to help me :)
