Why not work on one problem at a time.  First, uninstall Norton Antivirus, then reinstall Norton Antivirus.

i uninstalled and re-installed Norton Antivirus and got

Cfgwiz.dll failed to register. Your installation of Norton Antivirus is faulty. Please re-install

so re-installing didnt help at all

See if the following Symantec Document can help you completely remove Norton Antivirus before your try reinstalling again:

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav.nsf/docid/2004020909040706?Open&src=hot&docid=2003091115080306&nsf=nav.nsf&view=docid/2003091115080306?opendocument&src=hot&prod=norton%20antivirus&ver=2004%20for%20windows%202000/me/98&dtype=&prod=Norton%20AntiVirus&ver=2004%20for%20Windows%202000/Me/98/XP&osv=&osv_lvl=

Note that this is for Norton Antivirus 2004.  If you have a different version, please let us know.

In order to help with your network problem you need to tell us how you are connecting to the internet.  Is it directly to a cable or dsl modem or do you connect through a router?   Is it an ethernet connection to the modem or the router?  If it is an ethernet connection, does your ethernet adapter show up in Device Manager when you expand the listing for network adapters?  If it does, does it show that it has any problems?  I can go on with a bunch of other questions, but so many of the questions will depend on the answers to the above.  Post back with more information and we can go from there.

Our DSL is connected to a router, then to the computer. We have an ethernet connection. The reason for the router is for our Dell laptop and we can go online on that one. So that should mean that the router is working correctly.

Have you ever thought of using the help files on your computer?  There is wealth of information that can be obtained by clicking on Start > Help and Support and searching for terms like "Device Manager".  To open Device Manager, go to Start > Control Panel > Performance & Maintenance > System and then click on the Hardware tab then on the Device Manager button.

Do the link lights on the router and next to the port where you plug the ethernet cable into your computer both light up when both the router and computer are powered up and the cable is plugged in at both ends?

With the computer and router connected by the ethernet cable, go to a command prompt by going to Start > Run and typing cmd followed by Enter.  Then, in the command prompt window, type ipconfig /all (note the space betwen the g and the /) followed by Enter.  Write down the results and then type them into a reply to this message.

That shows that you are getting an IP address from the router, so all of the hardware appears to be functioning correctly.   The next thing to do is to see if we can repair the software.   Go to the following site, and download winsockfix for XP:

http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html

You will have to download it on a computer that has an internet connection, copy it to a floppy or CD-R disk, then copy to the hard drive of the problem computer and run it from there.

If that doesn't work, try lspfix from the following site:

http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm
