Network from XP to 98
I have a network connection from my Dell (operating system, Windows XP) via a router to an internet connection and to another computer (to call VAIO), operating system Windows 98. I do not have the VAIO being recognized in my network neighborhood. The puzzling part is: VAIO has Dell in its network neighborhood and maps to Dell drive. Dell recognizes third computer (to call Laptop) in network neighbordhood and maps to Laptop drives. This would indicate to me that Computer name is unique, and workgroup name is identical. This would also indicate to me that software configuration is correct. Dell pings to VAIO. WHY does it not show it in network neighborhood???

The search for VAIO fails.
I will try the website you suggested and look for clues there. Thanks.
I am of the mind at this point the problem resides on the VAIO or possibly the usb to ethernet adapter I have connected for the cable to the router. I am having to reset it to keep my internet connection through the router - be unplugging and reconnecting my adapter. In the meantime, now the VAIO does not recognize other computers on the network. I had a brief success for mapping to VAIO from Laptop, but connection was lost before files were accessible. Another indication probably that inconsistency is coming from adapter.
Any input or further assistance would still be greatly appreciated.

Steve
The 2nd article you recommended includes
ping win98 Another computer’s name NetBIOS name resolution failure
I have that situation, namely pinging with Dimension win98 computer name from an Inspiron 9200 with xp, I receive "..could not find host" Pinging ip works. So I appear to have NetBIOS name resolution failure. How do I correct that? I have NetBIOS over TCP/IP enabled on both computers. Win98 is connected to router by ethernet cable, Inspiron xp wireless. Both computers connect to internet through the router.
Thanks

ArtCampbell,
You might want to consider starting a new thread and thoroughly describing your problem, rather than posting a reply to a nearly 3 year old thread.
