Network or Remote Access

I've been trying so hard to figure out how to what I need to do, and I'm just as in the dark as when I first started.

What I would like to do is just be able to work from my Inspiron Laptop that is upstairs and my Desktop Dimension is down stairs.

Is there a way I can log into my desktop when I'm upstairs and work with my files in my desktop? I don't want to transfer my files. I just want to be able to get to them from my office upstairs where my laptos is.

I hear network and remote access. Who can tell me what to do. and in simple words how to achieve my goal.

Use Remote Desktop Connection that is built into Xp.  You will have to enbale the remote system to recive the connection (Systems Applet in Control Panel>Remote Tab).  Easy as can be.

I thank you for your reply, but I may left out some particulars. I'm using linksys router which is connect to my Dimension 2300 desktop downstairs and my Spiron laptop upstairs is receiving it connect via Dell card. So there is no cable connection all. Can you give anymore explicit information. I did as you said, but I didn't know what to do when I got there. What I need is when I have both computer on, if I'm upstairs I want to be able to go into the computer downstairs. I just don't understand what you are saying.

Please I think you have gotten me further than anyone else.

Thanks Much for your help. I will be waiting to hear from you again.

Would like to thank you for interest in trying to help me. I found the information on Microsoft. It an easy How to Net Work Giuide. Was finished in about 10 minutes. The Guide was absolutely awsome and easy to follow.

Thanks again
