Network Password Reset

I have two computers on a home wireless network. Let's for sake of simplicity call them "One" and "Two". One is wired directly to my Linksys WRT54G router which then is wired to my cable modem. Two is wirelessly linked to the Linksys router. The wireless system is 128bit WEP and functioning. The Linksys WRT54G also serves as a hardware firewall.

My problem is that computer Two can see into computer One but when I try to see into Two from One I am asked to enter a network login password. I do not know what that password might be. I do not recall ever setting up computer Two with a network password. Can anyone suggest where I might find out how to change or reset the network password on computer Two?

Thanks in advance for your kind help!

R.Olivaw2k,

What are the operating systems of the two PCs?  If "One" is XP Home or Win9X and "Two" is XP Pro, "Two" is probably set up for Windows Classic file sharing.  Open Windows Explorer and click Tools - Folder Options - File Types tab.  Scroll down to the bottom of Advanced Settings and make sure "Use simple file sharing" is checked.

R.Olivaw2k,

Enable the guest account on "Two."

Hi Paladin! Thanks for the response.

Computer One is WIN98SE and Two is WIN2KPro.

Palatin,

I have enabled "Guest" on Two. Still no luck. In fact, when I right click on Network Neighborhood on One now and then click on Entire Network is says "Unable to browse network. The network is not accessible."

I used to be able to see both computer One and Two when I opened Network Neighborhood.

R.Olivaw2k,

Have you in fact set a file or folder as shared on Two?  Make sure the permissions of the share are set to "Everyone" and configure the appropriate level of control.  Make sure NetBios over TCP/IP is enabled on all the PCs, found in the TCP/IP properties of the network adapter.

R.Olivaw2k,

Right click on the folder and select Sharing, then the Security tab.  Add the "Everyone" name and select the appropriate control.  OK out.

Paladin,

Oops! I had forgot that one must be logged on to the network on the One computer in order to see files on the network. Having properly logged in, I can now see the Two computer and even see two shared file folders. However, when I try to open the folders I now receive a message stating that they "are not accessible. Access denied."

I have set these folders and a printer to be able to be Shared on the network. And I have rechecked these settings several times now. I have restarted both computers and have logged propoerly on to the network on both.

I have the permissions set to "Everyone" and the "Netbios over TCP/IP" enabled as well. These facts have been true from the beginning.

I must be missing something simple to be this close and still no cigar.

Thanks!

R.Olivaw2k,

Good to hear that it's working.  To share the printer, open the printer's properties on "Two" and select sharing.  Give it a name (8 characters or less - how does "HP5650" sound?)  OK out.  On "One," perform an Add New Printer, indicate it is a network printer and browse to it.  Have the HP5650 driver CD/floppy ready since it will be asked for.  The Win98 driver will be installed on "One."

Thnanks Paladin. I can see the shared files in Two from One now. All that is left is to be able to print on the HP5650 printer attached to Two.

Recall computer configs:
One: WIN98SE, wired to Linksys WRT54G router, wired to Cable modem.
Two: WIN2K, wirelessly linked to WRT54G router.

I appreciate your time helping me with this issue.

Just a few comments on the original question of why the WinXP PC was asking for a password from the Win98 PC.

WinXP (and Win2K) only share files/folders that: are set to share mode and then only with the users that are allowed access.

When you try to connect to a WinXP folder, Win98 automatically sends the username and password that you USED TO LOGON ON TO Win98 WITH.

If you setup a user on the WinXP PC with the EXACT username and password that you use to logon to the Win98 PC, then you won't have to use the GUEST account, which is not very secure.

Just remember to give each shared resource the username(s) that you want to allow access for.

_Paladin,

Eureka, we have done it! Thanks!

Now how can I check if my home network is secure from the outside?

The Linksys WRT54G router has a hardware firewall and the One computer has Norton Personal Firewall 2003. Is there away that I can "ping" it from outside the network to see if it secure?

Thanks for all your patience and help.

Sincerely,
R.Oivaw2K
