network password

From my laptop running Windows ME, when i try to connect to my desktop, running Windows XP SP2, i can see the XP computer, but it asks for a network password to connect. I havn't set a network password and i've tried disabling the firewalls on both computers. I can acces the laptop fine from the desktop. Everything was working fine; this just started recently.

This can happen if you don't log in properly in Windows ME.   To fix it, right click on My Network Places and choose "Properties" from the drop down menu.   Change the Primary Network Logon to Windows Logon, OK your way out and reboot the computer.  When it asks for a username and password, leave the password field blank.  It will never ask for a password again and you will be logging onto the network with a null password.   See if that fixes the problem.

Ok, I tried that and it didn't work. Any other suggestions? I should also mention that it's not only on this laptop that there'sthe problem, other computers with various version of Windows also can't connect to the same one.
