Network problem with new Vostro 410

I just got a new Dell Vostro 410, running XP Pro, to replace a 5-year old Dimension 2400 that had been connected to my ATT DSL line via ethernet through a 2Wire 1800HG. My laptop and two other desktops (one of which is the replaced 2400) are connected through wireless cards or adapters. The three wireless computers came on line right away, get great internet access and work fine.  All the computers are running XP.

The problem is that I cannot access the Vostro or its USB connected printer through any of the wirelessly connected computers, which could print previously through the hardwired 2400. They all show up and can be accessed from the Vostro, and the Vostro appears in the work group, but not in My Network Place on the other three.

I have tried redoing the Network Wizard, but I'm having no luck at all.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Firewall on the Vostro?

Hmm ... I know the Windows Firewall is ON, but set to allow wireless connections.  It just dawned on me, though, that the McAfee firewall might be the problem.  I'm not at home now, but will check that as soon as I am.  That might explain why the Vostro can access the shared files on the other computers, but they cannot access shared files or the printer on the Vostro, despite the fact that the Vostro shows up in the Work Group of the other three computers.

Thanks for the tip.

Based on the grey hairs, I think I qualify as an 'old guy' as well. ;)

Check the firewall settings to see if they are set to allow "local" computers in.

Sure ... laugh at the old guy.

Now if I can just remember to check it when I get home from the office, I should be in good shape.

I'll report my findings.

Well ... that was a whole lot easier than I was afraid it was going to be.

I turned off the McAfee firewall ... and lo and behold, my host computer now is accessible by the wireless units, as is the printer.

The next step, when I have a bit more energy, will be to play with the custom firewall settings to see which will allow the network to function and still provide some protection.

Thank you Larry!

Glad I could help.  I'm also glad that once again I remembered to suggest checking the simple things first. ;)
