Syth,

Try this: Power down the laptop, remove power from the DSL modem for about 30 seconds.  Connect the CAT5 cable.  Power the DSL modem back up and then power up your laptop.

Also, depending on your DSL company, service may only be available to a specific MAC address.  If your desktop is the computer which is registered with the DSL company, the MAC address of your desktop may be the only system which is allowed to receive DSL service.  You will have to ask your DSL company if this is the case.

If this is the case, get a router, and clone the MAC address of your desktop system to the router.  Then you will be able to connect several computers to your DSL modem through the router.

Syth,

To help isolate this issue to either hardware or software, try to ping the following IP address:

127.0.0.1  -- If your system successfully pings this IP address, it is an indicator that your NIC driver is functioning correctly and that the TCP/IP protocol is functioning correctly.  Next, try to ping your DNS server IP address.  If you do not know your DNS server IP address, ping this IP address:

68.52.0.6  -- If your system successfully pings this IP address, it indicates that data is being successfully sent and received back.  BTW, that is one of the Comcast DNS servers.

What are the results?

Syth,

Check this MSKB article for some useful info on troubleshooting connectivity issues with a cable modem:

Most of this info applies to DSL as well as cable modems.
