Did you recently install any firewalls or inadvertently enable the Windows XP built-in firewall?  Is the other computer logged on to the network (if it has Cleint for Microsoft Networks as the primary Windows logon) or logged on with a null password (if Windows Logon is the primary network logon)?

Yes, recently upgraded mcafee, firewall included.

 I went back in and uninstalled firewall. Still doesn't work. I may have changed TCP/IP in windows 98 computer. ICS is not checked off. Netbios over TCP/Ip is enabled on win XP.

I'm going to completely uninstall mcafee and reboot , I'll let you know,

I went back into windows 98 and realized firewall installed here too.

Completely removed firewall, still unable to access network neighborhood unable to browse the network, network is not accessible. could you go over the network settings for me.

Primary logon is microsoft network, log on with null password.

I went into network properties and removed TCP/ip with my netwok card and tried to add it back again. I'm having problems with that now.

I couln't successfully remove all of mcafee, but firewall is gone on win 98.

I got an exclamation point on my sohoware ethernet card in device manager.

I tried to remove and refresh. Uninstalled and reinstalled card.

Uh-Oh now I get error at start up.

VSCpop.dll file can't load.

Please help

I'm having trouble reinstalling ethernet card. After it recognizes new hardware, I follow directions exactly for sohoware. It asks for windows 98 cd , copies files and then it freezes up. Not copying drivers right. I downloaded new driver from web site , but that does not help. It asks for original soho floppy.

Thanks for the Mcafee link, I went there earlier and found the vsc file.  I ran regedit and deleted everything. However, at startup I get C: bad command Mcafee etc. 

 I'm about ready to format and start all over.

I've taken out the ethernet card about 8 times already.

Have you tried swapping the network card around in the PCI slots.  I had a Sohoware network card that had IRQ conflict problems on an XPS-R series computer and would not work when the card was sharing an IRQ with the video card.  The only solution was to swap the PCI cards around until the Sohoware card got an IRQ different from video card.

Ok, I'm online with windows 98.

I swapped the card to a different pci and had the same problem. I messed around with the 98 Boot disk, did a SYS C: .  files transferred?

Now I still have the network problem and every time I reboot, get the

c: bad command or file name  Mcafee and some other jibberish.

What should i do next, Volcano man thanks for coming through again for me.

I installed Mcafee again this time making sure firewall wasn't installed.

Everything seems ok. I'm just trying to get win Xp and 98se networked right again. On win 98 se when I hit network neighborhood it says, network not accessible. I can access web on both computers

Make sure the Windows XP firewall is not enabled on the machine running Windows XP.  If you have a third party firewall, make sure it is configured to allow local network traffic.

Boy, do I feel like a jackxxx.

After reading network help, I rebooted and instead of hitting cancel for network logon, I hit ok.

Now I can see the computers on windows 98.
