thank you thats what i wanted to know...
i am only going to hook my laptop to my desktop to transfer files and pics.

This would depend on the number of network devices that you wish to connect. A hub turns one connection into many.
been there.........even read through my help files..
all i want to know is do you have to have the hub?

The alternative is a hub/switch and two straight cables.
Either will work the same.
