Networking computers through a LINKSYS Router.
Hello Members,
I am a new member, having joined today, and I am not too computer savvy, so be patient. I joined the group in order to get help and have questions answered by people who have computer smarts, but who are not "Teckies" so to speak. eventually, as I learn and grow, I hope to be able to help others also. My wife recently purched a new computer, because we were literally racing home to get to the computer first, but seriously we needed a second computer. I then purchased a LINKSYS Router to allow both of us to have Internet access. My son will also be connected to the Router as soon as I run the Ethernet Cable to his room. My wife and I have XP, my son has 98-2nd Edition.
Because we have the Router I know that the computers can be Networked through it, unfortunately, I do not have the know how to do it. So HELP.
I have two questions:
1) How would I go about setting up a Network through the Router, to share C-Drive files and printers. My printer has a camera card, my wife's is a three-In-One.
2) I plan to take some courses on Dell On-Line Education and wanted to know, if anyone knows which is better for learning fundimental Networking: C# Programming Part 1 or Cisco Interconnected NTWK Device Part 1. There are course descriptions, but if someone has first hand knowledge I would appreciate their advice. Or, if anyone knows of a better De;ll course to sign up for.
Thank you all,
SIRDHJ

SIRDHJ,
Good decision to get a Linksys router to network your 3 PCs. If you browse this forum you will see many positive remarks about Linksys products.
The web sites here and here have very good tutorials on how to set up a home network. This Linksys site is also very good for a basic networking education. You will not have any problem networking your 3 PCs, even though one is Win98. You will be creating a peer-to-peer network and all three PCs can participate.
The tutorial sites I mentioned above will help you configure Fiale and Printer Sharing. However, only very high end scanners can be shared. Check the manufacturer's web site for your 3-in-1 to see if the scanner is sharable. When a camera is plugged into the PC it appears as just another hard drive, so it is sharable.
I don't believe either of the courses you mention will give you what you are looking for - a basic networking education. C++ is a fairly high level programming language. And the Cisco networking course will probably give you more networking depth than you really need (or want). My suggestion is to read the tutorial sites and then make a decision about what courses you want to take.

Dear SirDHJ,
I can help you on setting up your Linksys. First you need to obtain Linksys DNS address to get inside the router and that is:192.168.1.1
From there, you would need to type in username: "admin" and leave the password blank. You will need to configure your router by putting your username and password that you provided with your ISP.
Secondly, on Windows XP, you need to goto your "control panel" and click on "network and internet connections". Then you need to click on "setup or change your home or small office network" Your wizard will guide you through on setting up your small home network. then, it will ask you two choices 1. will this computer run through another computer to get to the other computer? 2. will this computer be the main computer and other computers in your house run to your computer to access the internet?
Now, as for Windows 98se, goto control panel and double click on network neighborhood it will ask you two choices 1. will this computer run through another computer to get to the other computer? 2. will this computer be the main computer and other computers in your house run to your computer to access the internet?
just make sure you DSL or cable modem is hooked up "WAN" port in the back of your router. Then hook your computer to port 1,2,3. Port 4 shares with uplink and you don't want to hook it up to it. Of course if you have a port switch then you may hook it up to port 4. If you have anymore questions, please free to write me at: purplevan@verizon.net
Hope I got you this far.
Good luck!

SirDHJ,
Please follow Paladin's advice, as the sites he recommends are excellent and the most accurate.
Fudgie,
Please try to provide accurate advice if you are trying to help people on these forums. The default for the Linksys router is that username should be blank and password is admin, not as you have stated.
