First, if you are trying to connect the two computers directly by an ethernet cable, you will need a special cable called a cross-over cable.  So before proceding any farther, make sure the cable is a cross-over cable.  Next go to the following site and find the network tutorial and follow the step by step directions - www.homenethelp.com

Yes, you specifically need to buy one that says it is a cross-over cable.

Thank you very much. How do i know if it is a "cross-over" cable... will it say onthe packaging? i have several different cables all of which are "LAN" or "networking" cables. do i need to go shopping for one that specifically says "cross-over cable" ?

thank you again

i went to the website that you had the link for (i have a router) i was able to get the files from my desktop on my laptop, but not the other way around. ... is that because i do not have the cross over cable?? i am a little confused. It said that i do not need the crossover cable with the router... but as i said ... i can only access desktop files from laptop and not vice versa .... sorry to be a pain.... i jsut really want this to work.

thank you

Thank you for all of your help, I got it all figured out, all I had to do was restart both the laptop and the desktop!

Thank you so much, I am so happy that this worked!

Thank you over and over and over

You never said that you have router.  In your intitial message you said you wanted to connect the two computers together.  I gave you instructions for connect the two computers together.  If I had known that you were trying to connect the two computers together through a router, I would never have suggested a cross-over cable.  With the router, you do not need a cross-over cable.

I am sorry for any inconvenience... I didnt know that i could use my router for that ... i thought it was only for sharing an internet connection. But thanks to the site that you sent me to ... i was able to figure out how to set it up without the cross over cable .... so even though (and i am sorry) i didnt give you all the info you needed, you were still able to help me. That makes you a wonderful tech person.

I thank you so much for all your help.

another thing that i didnt tell you is that my desktop has been unable to get online for about a month for some reason that i have not been able to fix (i have spent countless hours on the phone with tech support) and this fixed it!! so i am extatic!

Thank you thank you thank you
