Networking help please

I own 2 Dells, one recently purchased and one purchased a few years ago.  Both are network-capable.  My main (new) computer is hooked up to a DSL modem and I wish both to work from the same connection.  What exactly do I need to connect the two?  (They are in rooms 40 feet apart.)  Please keep in mind that you are dealing with a non-tech savvy person, so please stick to common English terminology.

You need to purchase and install a wireless cable/dsl router that you will connect to the dsl modem.  You will also need to purchase and install a wireless network adapter for the computer located in the room 40 feet away.  The computer currently connected to the dsl modem will then make an ethernet connection to the router and the computer 40 feet away will make a wirelss connection to the router.  This all assumes that your dsl modem is capable of connecting with ethernet.  If the dsl modem is a USB-only modem, then things get much more complicated because routers that connect by USB are nearly impossible to find.

you could also have trouble 40 feet away if there are walls and other things that can block the signal.regardless of what the manufactures say wireless router really only go at strong signal strenght at about 20 feet-30 feet.make sure you get a router with two antennas and don't point them straight up.Point them out so the signal will go out not up.

Bought and (hopefully) installed the router and the adapter, but still no luck.  I'm not sure if I understand your post.  I connect the router to the DSL modem and then connect the router to my comp using an ethernet cable?  I'm using the router's ethernet connection to connect to the DSL modem directly.  Where would I plug in the ethernet cable from my comp?  One of the four "other" slots on the back of the router?  (Bear with me.  I'm technologically illiterate, remember?)

If it makes a difference, the router and adapter are both Linksys Wireless-B.

yes.you should have one port for your internet and four other ports called LAN ports for plugging in directly from your computer.so it should be like this:
DSL modem to router internet port.
From one of the 4 LAN ports to your computer.
