Networking or internet Problem?

I am trying to connect an HP pavilian a1520e to a network with my Dell Dimension 4100. We bought the linksys Wireless-g brodband router and the little thing you plug into the USB port. The linksys and DSL modem are hooked up to the dell DImension and it has no problem getting on the internet(obviously)but we can't get the HP to connect to the internet. What can we do and what exactly do we need, just incase I am missing something. Please give me all the information you know about how to get the PC without the router hooked up to it on to the internet , or all the information you have on the whole subject because I am really at aloss.

You say "The linksys and DSL modem are hooked up to the dell DImension".  Are you saying that the DSL modem and the Linksys Router are both connected directly to the Dimension?  If so, this will never work.   The router must be connected to the modem and the 4100 must be connected to one of the LAN ports on the router.

You are not being clear!  You say "that is the way that I have it"  To what is the word "that" referring to?

If you have a wireless router and a wireless USB adapter for the second computer and you have set the network up correctly, then you have all the hardware you need assuming you have set the network up correctly.

The setup should be as follows.  DSL modem connected to telephone line.  DSL modem connected to the WAN (or Internet) Port on the router by an ethernet cable.   Dimension connected to one of the LAN ports on the router by an ethernet cable.

Both the router and the wireless USB adapter should have come with setup instructions.  Did you read and follow those instructions.  If you did then the other computer should be connecting to the internet through the wireless router.

Sorry, that is the way that I have it but I was wondering how I would connect the second computer in my home wirelessly through the wireless router. I need to know the hardware required for the second computer and what all I need to do. The DImension works fine on the internet. Do I need any thing fo the second computer other than the compact Wireless-g network adapter and how do I set up and connect to a network? Also how do I get the second computer on the internet through the wireless router?

I have it set up exactly the way you say it should be on the Dimension 4100 and the Dimension works fine on the internet(I am using it to post messages here). When I try to get on the internet with the second computer(HP a1520e) it won't get on the internet but it says it is connected to linksys and the connection quality is exellent. I don't know if I have to tell the HP to connect to a certain IP address or what for the "network". What is all the hardware required inside the HP that I need to connect to the internet through the wireless router other than the USB network adapter and how do I create a "network"? Do I have to change something In the Dimension 4100's Network and dial up connections settings? And do I Have to do something to the HP's settings to connect to the "network" and get on the internet?.

You don't have to change anything on the 4100 - it is working fine and has nothing to do with the connection on the HP.  If you have a USB wireless adapter on the HP, then you need no additional hardware, it should be working.  On the HP, to help troubleshoot this problem, go to Start > Run and type cmd then click OK. In the command prompt window that opens, type ipconfig /all then hit the enter key. Write down the output from this command or select it and save it to a txt file, then copy this output into a reply to this message.

I've decided to just get a long ethernet cable and hook it from the HP to the Linksys router. Please let me know if I will encounter any problems.

It should be easier enough to set up the wireless, but you seem unwilling to work through this.

If you want to run ethernet cable, the maximum length is about 300 feet (100 meters).

It looks like you are running Windows vista onthat computer.  Is that correct?
The ipconfig output shows that you are making a connection to your router and that you are getting an IP address from the router.   What happens when you open Internet Explorer?  Does it connect to your homepage or give an error?

Do you have any firewall software running on that computer that may be blocking the internet connection?

When I double click Internet explorer, the window comes up and at the bottom it says looking up go microsoft.com and at the top it says connecting but then it says the web page cannot be displayed. I've tried connecting to a bunch of different websites and it says the same thing. I am running windows vista on that computer.

Here's another problem. I turned off the firewall and it still did not work. I connected a Ethernet cable from the HP to one of the liknsys router's ports and I don't know what to do after that. I try to set up a new connection through the internet and it asks me the user name and password the IP gives me and I type in the same one that is on this computer(the one that works) and it won't connect. Is it possible that the windows vista and the linksys are not compatable. What can I do now that I have the cable or what do I have to do in order to get the HP online?
