First, make sure that both wireless network cards are running in ad-hoc mode.  What you are trying to do will not work unless both network cards are in ad-hoc mode.  Next make sure the File and Printer Sharing are enabled on both computers and the at least one folder or drive is designated as a shared resource.  Make sure each computer is in the same workgroup and has a unique network name.  Make sure NetBIOS over TCP is enabled on each computer, then make sure all software firewalls are configured to all local network traffic.  For information on manually setting this up, see www.homenethelp.com

Hi thanks for replying - and i am grateful for the informaton - i was just wondering if i start over and delete the suff i have already set up on my laptop - coz i think i left out the bit about sharing files and folders when i did it - and i dont know how to change it.  And will that enable the internet connection sharing too? And one more thing how do i check that they are both set to adhoc?  I am sorry for sounding dumb.

To put the wireless network card in ad-hoc mode, you need to open Network Connections, right click your wireless network connection and select Properties.  Then click on the Wireless Network tab and then on the Advanced button, and set the card in Ad-Hoc mode there.  How this is done in Windows 98 should be similar, but I have no computers running Windows 98 with a wireless network card to check this on.

To enable Internet Connection Sharing on a Windows XP computer (it is only enabled on the computer that makes the internet connection), open Network Connections, right click on the network connection that connects to the internet and select Properties.  Then click on the Advanced tab and check the box under Internet Connection Sharing.

To share a drive or folder, open My Computer or Windows Explorer, right click on the drive or folder that you want to share on the network and select Sharing.

You need to be more clear as to what your problem is.  Can either computer connect to the internet?  If only one computer can't connect, I assume it is not the one directly making the connection.  On the computer that is not directly making the connection, hopefully you don't have Internet Connection Sharing enabled - it should only be enabled on the computer that makes the internet connection.  What kind of internet connection is this (cable/dsl/dialup)?

That is an IP address that Windows assigns when it cannot get a valid IP address.  It explains why it is not working, but it doesn't yet tell us what is causing the problem.  What happens if you run winipcfg again then click on Release and then on Renew?

First, check to see if the TCP/IP properties on the desktop are set to obtain an IP address automatically.  Since this computer is running Windows 98, go to Start > Run and type winipcfg then click on OK.  Make that your etherent connection is selected (not the ppp connection), then see if it is getting an IP address.  Report back what you find.

You would save yourself a lot of pain an aggravation if you just went out and purchased a $30 wireless router and ran the wireless network cards in normal mode.  I've never tried to use internet connection sharing over wireless, so I can't be of too much more help.  Does your dsl modem connect with ethernet or USB?  Is it capable of connecting with ethernet?  This is an essential consideration if you are going to use the current dsl modem because it is next to impossible to find one that connects with USB.
